UEFA Weekend: What to Look Forward to in the Remaining Football Fixtures

November 10
12:48 2021

The final round of matches in the FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers is finally happening this weekend after almost a month-long recess. And fans surely are excited to support their favorite teams.

On November 11-16, the remaining teams in the European bracket will face head-on before the international break begins, in preparation for the 2022 play-offs. The results of the match-ups will determine who will join Denmark and Germany, as well as host Qatar (which automatically qualifies for the play-off) in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s look into what the UEFA weekend has to offer.

First is the big match between Italy and Switzerland

The Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, their first disappointment since 1958, caused shockwaves among the entire football community. A lot has happened since then, what with winning EURO 2020 and a world record unbeaten run but–whisper it–Roberto Mancini’s men have work to do to avoid a similar fate. Switzerland has lost only one of their last 36 World Cup qualifying matches and, with just two games remaining, they are locked on 16 points with Italy. Prepare yourself, Friday’s meeting in Rome will go a long way to deciding who takes the top spot.

Will Spain be able to rise to the occasion?

Italy isn’t the only big gun under the pump going into the last two qualifiers. Portugal is destined for a last-day decider against Serbia, England needs a result against Albania to keep the chasing pack at bay while, most precariously, Spain trails an Alexander Isak-inspired Sweden by two points in Group B. The pair meet on the final day but before then Luis Enrique’s side has to come through a tricky trip to face a Greece side who held them at home and beat Sweden in September–certainly, they can’t afford a slip-up.

Head-to-head: Norway vs the Netherlands

There is another last-day decider on the cards in Group G when the Netherlands host Norway. The Norwegians trail the Oranje by two points with two to play and will hope that the small constellation of stars forced to sit out last month’s fixtures through injury can inspire them to a victory over Latvia that would set up a mouth-watering finale.
