Phoenix Hill Sports Park Design Competition concluded

The much-anticipated Phoenix Hill Sports Park Design Competition concluded successfully on October 11, 2020. The design numbered FH0026 won over the judges and crowned the champion.

Sponsored by the Department of Venue Construction and Infrastructure Improvement of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu, the Chengdu City Real-estate Group Co., Ltd, and the Chengdu City Construction Investment & Management Group Sports Culture Development Co., Ltd, and co-organized by the Chengdu Z/S Studio, the competition kicked off on August 17 themed as “Find Creative Players”. Altogether 750 entries were submitted with 1605 pieces of works each being assigned with an identifying serial number. Afterwards 847 pieces were qualified for the two rounds of competition. The applicants came from four continents across the world, including designers from well-known studios of architectural design from both home and abroad, and those from prestigious institutions for higher education such as Yale University and Tsinghua University. The competition provided a platform for professional, amateur and pioneering designers to compete and exchange views, and their works were judged by a variety of standards such as the theme and concept, the completion of details, the ability to innovate, and the vision of crossover and cross-cultural pursuit.

The six judges were professionals in the field of arts and design, including Yuji Koiso from the Japan Graphic Designers Association, who is also the Creative Director of NDC CHINA, Inc., Guang Yu, co-founder of A Black Cover Design studio, Zhang Shaojun, Professor of SIVA-DeTao School of Design, Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, Wang Hai, a well-known artist and designer,  Dezio, a famous street artist and co-founder of Urban Art United, and specially invited Professor Sui Jianguo from Central Academy of Fine Art, who is also a famous sculptor in China.

The final round was held in the Chengdu City Concert Hall where designers of 12 shortlisted entries presented their works and related details on the stage, elaborating on the themes of their design and answering questions from the judges. The judges then gave the score on the spot. After fierce competition, the design FH0026 won the first prize.

The second prizes went to design works with serial number FH0727, FH0561 and FH1508, and the third prizes were FH1204, FH1049, FH0572 and FH0310. In addition, 25 audience representatives voted on spot for the winner of the Most Popular Award, and each judge picked out a winner for the Judge Favorite Award, which was to recognize the work of those who didn’t enter the final round but won the favor of the judges.

After the competition, the winning design will be developed by an art team led by Sui Jianguo into a series of installations to be settled in the Phoenix Hill Sports Park.

This competition is not only a logo design event, but part of activities heralding the 31st FISU World University Games Chengdu. As a world-level construction and a future landmark of Chengdu, the sports park will host basket games of Summer Universiade next year and the 18th football Asia Cup in 2023. The design of the stadiums featuring culture and sportsmanship is expected to enhance the city image and promote the sports products related.

The competition has gone beyond the circle of design as a stage to show a multi-faceted Chengdu of inclusiveness, affinity and professionalism. Chengdu has been showcasing to the world its interpretation and integration of sportsmanship and city character. As Wang Hai said, “A city dwells on its history and past, but prospers on its future.” The logo design is a symbol for creativity and sportsmanship with which people here usher in a bright future.
