3 Years of Academic Growth in 1 – NEF’s Incredible Success in Somerton
Somerton, AZ – March 5, 2020 – The National Education Foundation (NEF) STEM+ Academy program at Somerton School District shows its students are on track to achieve three years of growth in math and reading this academic year.
Somerton, like many districts with predominantly low-income, English learner students, was struggling to meet academic standards. With the help of a grant, they were able to bring in the comprehensive NEF STEM+ Academy program, which utilizes SuccessMaker to provide individualized math and reading education.
Dr. Appu Kuttan, Chairman of NEF remarked about the Somerton program, “By combining the highest quality educational software, with motivational incentives, and engaging all the stakeholders in the community, we are getting unparalleled results in schools across the country.”
As test scores in the United States keep falling and school budgets become increasingly restricted, new solutions are needed to adequately prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. Programs like NEF STEM+ Academies are an example of how schools can intelligently leverage technology to fill these gaps.
Anna Fermanis, Somerton Director of Curriculum and Instruction, stated “Having SuccessMaker at Somerton School District has allowed our students to be actively thinking about information, making choices, and executing skills on their own. This motivates the students as they are pleasantly surprised at their level of accomplishment, which at times is difficult to show with more conventional academic tasks. Moreover, the teachers have learned to become facilitators of learning rather than the dispensers of information. This has helped them focus on each student’s individual needs.”
