A Fabulous February Beckons for NextUp Comedy in Partnership with Soho Theatre

London, UK – NextUp, a digital comedy club streaming incredible unseen sets from the best of comedy’s rising stars, have announced they are releasing four exclusive shows recorded live in partnership with the Soho Theatre in London over the next few weeks. February will also see NextUp release specials from Matt Gubser, President Obonjo, Micahel Legge, Alex Kealy and more.

Soho Theatre Live Recordings – Launching 24th February:

Adidi Mittal – ‘Mother of Invention’

Jen Brister – ‘Meaningless’

Lazy Susan – ‘Forgive me, Mother!’

Shappi Khorsandi – ‘Live in Soho’

NextUp and Soho Theatre have partnered to film and release four exclusive specials. This is the first partnership of its kind between a major comedy and an online service and the shows will be available to stream on NextUp and Soho Theatre On Demand.

NextUp co-founder Sarah Henley says; ‘We are really looking forward to the shows we recorded at Soho Theatre seeing the light of day. We’re always striving to give our members the best and most exciting acts on the circuit and these four very special specials definitely won’t disappoint!’

Motherhood: the most celebrated and exploited condition of human existence. Joining an illustrious line of shows by straight white men about their daddy issues, this is a show by a straight brown woman about her mummy issues. The star of Netflix’s Comedians of the World and her own hour-long special, Aditi returns to Soho following her critically acclaimed 2017 debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Sketch duo and Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominees Lazy Susan – aka Celeste Dring and Freya Parker – perform their smash hit Forgive Me, Mother!, for the final time. The show was a huge critical success in Edinburgh 2018, garnering five star reviews and enjoying sold out performances at Soho Theatre, Leicester Square Theatre and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Ever wanted to know the meaning of lie? No, neither has Jen.  She’s too busy trying to stop her twins from using her shoes as a toilet. Still, we’re only on this planet for a finite time, wouldn’t it be good to find a bit of meaning in your otherwise pointless existence? Join Jen as she clutches at all the straws trying to make sense of it all.

Shappi talks about what it means to be addicted to stand-up, to have a father who is more controversial than her and to bring a pudding to a red-carpet event… Shappi Khorsandi is one of the most recognisable faces of British comedy, performing all over the world and appearing on TV programmes and panel shows such as Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You and Live At The Apollo. She established herself as one of the finest UK comics in 2006 with her sell out show Asylum Speaker. This show lead to the publication of her childhood memoirs, the bestselling “A Beginner’s Guide To Acting English“. Her first novel, “Nina’ Not Ok” was a critically acclaimed bestseller.

Release Dates:

Matt Gubser – ‘Daddy Issues’ – 27th January 2020

President Obonjo – ‘Goodbye Mr President’ – 31st January 2020

Michael Legge – ‘The Idiot’ – 5th February 2020

Ali Brice – ‘Bin Wondering’ – 12th February 2020

Alex Kealy – ‘Rationale’ – 19th February 2020

Also dropping this month:

San Francisco based comedian Matt Gubser’s 2015 show delves into fatherhood, sex, dating, politics, religion, and a few other odds and ends. Delivered in the comic’s signature dry, irreverent style this tale of single fatherhood is a smart, dark and perceptive piece of stand-up.

African dictator President Obonjo (who is currently in exile in Britain) continues on his campaign to be the first President to take the UK comedy scene by storm. ‘Goodbye Mr President’ tells the tale of an unlikely friendship between the dictator and an Englishman. The man behind the construct, Benjamin Bello, brings his third show as the Dear Leader to Edinburgh with great success, not one to be missed.

A splendid hour of hard-hitting comedy from one of the angriest men on the UK circuit; Michael Legge delights with a show full to bursting with ‘big laughs and ranty surrealism’ (The List). The Idiot received rave reviews across the board and is certainly one of the smartest hours of comedy out there.

A surreal yet honestly reflective hour of masterful comedy. Having spent time in a wheelie bin (for warmth, obviously), Ali’s mind has been wandering and wondering. Brice has tried to throw a lot away – including himself, and all he knows is that he doesn’t want to be in a bin again. Ever. But how’s he coping with his second chance at life?

Political comic Alex Kealy explores the emotional roots behind our seemingly-rational thoughts in this crafted and well thought out show from last year’s Fringe. Dubbed the ‘rising star of the British stand-up scene’ (List), it’s a tough title to live up to but Alex manages it with ease.
