Schneider Electric India Day 3 Session at Elecrama

January 22
09:35 2020

Day 3 at Elecrama opened on the first day of the work week and saw a massive footfall at the Schneider Electric Booth which was bustling with activity- customer visits, global leaders’ attendance, industry colleagues joining the Thought Leadership Theatre and more- it was an enriching day. Here are some learnings from the 6 Thought Leadership Theatre sessions today!

Session 1: Building Machines for the New Digital Economy – TeSys Island & Modicon M262

At the Thought Leadership Theatre, Shrinivas Chebbi, President, Power Products, Schneider Electric India and Meenu Singhal, VP Industry, Schneider Electric India examined how machine manufacturers are leveraging technology in the digital economy. Their discussion focused on how Schneider Electric’s TeSys Island can make machines smarter and reduce their downtime—bringing unique features into the portfolio so that OEMs can remain at the top.

With digitisation, the manufacturing industry landscape is changing technology is not just enabling consumers, it is helping machine builders too. Today, machines can be remotely managed, availability can be predicted including when the demand is at peak.

Meenu talked about the challenges in machine manufacturing space, the need for scaling, customising as per the changing customer needs and probed on the impact it would have on the workforce, if machines undergo digital transformation.  OEMs are under profit pressure. Machine downtime adds up to high costs and huge penalty. 20 MN to 100 MN INR is spent, every time there is a production disruption, as pointed by Shrinivas.

And this is where TeSys Island becomes a differentiator. With TeSys, one can manage penalties well. You can combine and integrate a lot of things: from predictive analytics to monitoring to generating massive revenue models. Dependency on machines decreases, creates opportunities to dramatically disrupt your business model and addresses the challenges of the new digital economy.

Schneider Electric is committed to making its OEM customers and partners hugely successful and deliver value to the end customers. Schneider Electric also has an extensive network of partners who are inspired to skill up- success in a digital economy depends in a big way on learning too- Shrinivas concluded.

Session 2: The Future of Homes, Connected Homes

Srinivas Shanbhouge, VP, Retail Business, Schneider Electric India joined in a conversation with Andre Berk, VP, Home & Distribution, EAJ, India, Pacific & South America and Christine Clausse, VP, Connected Living Cluster, Schneider Electric, South & LATAM at the Thought Leadership Theatre.

The discussion began with Christine giving a global perspective of Connected Homes. With Connected Homes, your home is always connected, and safety and comfort are an integral part of the ecosystem. Talking about Home Automation, Andre said that it is not just for high-end customers. With Bluetooth and connectivity, the definition of home automation is significantly changing.

Talking about making home automation a reality in India, Srinivas pointed five challenges which home buyers come across often, these include- first, the existing Connected Home solutions are only designed for new homes. Secondly, it is not designed for everyone, given there is a diversified generation living in Indian families. Thirdly, the installation is a long process. Fourth and fifth points include—difficult to operate and expensive in costs, respectively. With the arrival of Schneider Electric’s Easy Home solutions, the above complexity can be addressed.

The discussion touched upon topics like Go-to-market strategies, how Schneider Electric is focusing on Connected Homes, making it an open, scalable and adaptive platform and which can be easily integrated with devices.

With Connected Homes, we are building an open system, where we can integrate all products, devices into our ecosystem and provide the best home automation system, bringing comfort, security and sustainability.

Session 3: From OT to the Cloud: Cybersecuring the transition

The Fireside Chat with Anil Kadam, EcoStruxure Solutions Architect, Schneider Electric India; Vinayak Godse, VP, Data Security Council of India; Malligarjunan Easwaran, Security Practice Lead, HPE Pointnext, Hewlett Packard Enterprise India Pvt. Ltd., brought to the forefront the topic of Cybersecurity in Operational Technology (OT), the fundamental differences between cybersecurity in IT and OT.

With the arrival of digitisation, digitalisation and digital transformation, today we can send operational data out of premises. It is no longer confined within OT premises. However, there are certain standards, compliances for data transition from OT to Cloud.

From regulatory perspective to technological view on communication protocols to cryptography, encryption and Root of Trust (RoT), the conversation explored a range of topics in Cybersecurity and its use cases in the OT environment and in the industry.

While we can experience productivity and find new possibilities, taking care of security and safety issues are a priority when it comes to protecting OT infrastructure.

Session 4: Climate Change, An Energy Issue Tackled Through Technology

Anil Chaudhry, MD & Zone President, Greater India, Schneider Electric and Venkat Garimella, VP Strategy and Alliance, Schneider Electric India joined in a discussion on a critical issue of our times—Climate Change and how technology is addressing the energy landscape. Venkat opened the discussion on the climate pledge taken during 2015 COP21 in Paris. Five years later, he pointed, things haven’t changed much. We are on the verge of major catastrophe, which is seen in the number of bushfires, unwarranted rainfall, untimely monsoons and other natural disasters. That is why, the subject of tackling climate crisis becomes a critical for organisations too.

Anil Chaudhry remarked that as a society, as a country, and as an organisation, it is our responsibility to minimise our energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions. Circular economy and sustainability have taken the centre stage and it is the responsibility of the leaders to contribute to the cause. At Schneider Electric, the way we responsibly engineer our solutions to our customers and partners, we were able to control 100 million tonnes of carbon emissions. We have not just pledged towards climate change and environmental sustainability, we are becoming leaders in this path.

On the question—how technology is helping to combat climate change and carbon emissions, the talk explored our EcoStruxure’s approach to energy efficiency and sustainability. From operations to decision makers, by utilising the three layers of the EcoStruxure, we are able to control, manage optimise energy efficiently.  Schneider Electric is proactively working towards responsible energy consumption and utilisation.

As an organisation committed to the environment, efficiency and sustainability, we follow ethics and best practices, build responsible products that ensure safety and make no compromise when it comes to investing. We look at long-term impact and not on short-term gain.

Session 5: Switchboard of the Future

Nadege Petite, EVP, Power Products Division, Schneider Electric and Shrinivas Chebbi, President, Power Products, Schneider Electric India talked about disruption happening in the Power sector and about Schneider Electric’s transformation towards becoming all Electric and all Digital at the Thought Leadership Theatre. The three key pillars that we are focused to achieve are Digital, Electrify and Decarbonisation.

We are working towards building an efficient electrical system. Digital is a reality for all of us. Our electrical switch boards will have new interface and seamless interaction between humans and machine. Looking from an end user perspective, Shrinivas probed implementation of digital technologies and if it is going to add complexity to the business?  Being all electrical means more renewable integration. Electricity will become the essential bloodline of all economic activity.

24/7 availability, at an acceptable cost will be the norm and 100 percent uptime, everywhere and for everyone. With more complex electricity system, the challenge lies with supply increasingly decentralised. And, that is what the industry needs to brace for. To achieve this, we must productise to reduce the complexity and digitise the existing energy management. Digital will enhance productivity and lead to efficiency. We need to relook at different types of business models. At the same time, there is a challenge to access energy.

At Schneider Electric, we have an ecosystem of partners, channel distributors, panel builders, electricians working together to realise the objectives.

Session 6:  Artificial Intelligence for Predictive maintenance

This ‘TED Type Talk’ was delivered by Sudhir Puthran, VP, Global Services, Schneider Electric, where he shared how our evolution to Industry 4.0 is forcing us to drive innovations for Operational Excellence, and Asset Performance Management (APM) is a critical component of this strategy. APM 4.0 is all about prescriptive analytics, machine learning, Smart connected assets and services, IIoT platforms, Industry best practices and digital twins.

IIOT and IOT is all about connected assets, and sharing an interesting nugget Sudhir said, the number of people logging to internet was outpaced by number of assets which logged on the internet! This is powerful and we need to see how we can leverage this for businesses.

Sharing the shifting approach to maintenance Sudhir stated there are four stages of maintenance- stage 1 is reactive, stage 2 preventive, time- based maintenance independent of need, stage 3 is condition based, which is need- based maintanance and the fourth one is predictive –these last 2 stages are data -driven maintanance and way enhanced in terms of what they offer to businesses and customers.

It is important to be able to leverage vast amount of data generated to gain intelligent insights. The need of the hour is actionable analytics-where data tells you exactly what to do. What is even better is that this data is available on your mobiles allowing you to make decisions at the touch of a screen. That’s the power of APM.

All this helps to bring down downtime costs and reactive costs, improves operational efficiency and safety. Sanjay shared an interesting case study of BASF which looked at the benefits which accrued to this behemoth post Schneider Electric’s partnership.

Sudhir concluded by sharing that the benefits to customer in terms of peace of mind is supercritical – this ability of monitoring is the basic level of value but what it offers in terms of analytics, is the real power of this offering.  Here’s to a new world where data may be captured anywhere and vital information can be drawn from that.
